Writing Content for Your Own Business

Over the past couple of months, I have shared some tips if you are writing your own content.

It’s not always possible to outsource – whether due to just starting a business or needing to reduce overheads. You may like writing and find it enjoyable. Whatever reason you have decided to create your own content, good luck and I hope my tips are of use.

Shhhh…

I’ll let you into a secret – no one really knows what they are doing with content. It’s mainly about giving it a go, seeing what works, tweaking, and going back around the loop. What we thought we knew has just been turned upside down in the past year. The impact of covid has changed what content people want to engage with, when they want to engage, and how they want to engage.

Why use a content writer?

You could question what is the point of a “content creator” if there is no magic secret formula to instantly get results. I believe you are paying for two things: expertise and time.  When you do something all day, across different sectors and platforms, and it is your passion, you tend to become an expert: you learn the quirks and trends quicker because it is all you are doing. The expert can bring that knowledge to your business. And time – by that I mean your time. You may be a master chocolatier or the Da Vinci of the nail art world. Whatever it is you do I can guarantee that your time is better spent doing what you do, and outsourcing those business needs that may not be your strong point. You can spend all day creating content and there is no invoice to be sent at the end of it: has that been a good return on investment of your time?

But nearly everyone starts writing their own content – and most do it well. You know your values, your customers and your product/ service. Soak up whatever advice and education you can get, read any tips you can find and crack on. I love it and hopefully, you will too.

Main tips to remember

A quick summary of the main points to remember:

  • Purpose – have a goal, a purpose to any content you are creating. Define what you are hoping to achieve and make the content fit for the purpose.
  • Measure – use the tools available to check how successful your content is against your goal.
  • Adapt – not working? Change, evolve and adapt. Keep the goal in mind, and keep measuring.
  • Reader – focus on the reader, not you. What content do you need to share with them to achieve your goal?
  • Accurate – spelling, grammar, information, format. Check and double-check.
  • Long game – it could be six to twelve months before you see the improvements you want in SEO, or see the customer growth. Consistent, steady activity to build trust and your profile will help.

Good luck, and enjoy.
